Columbus Gay Men's Chorus: Side by side for six seasons
The 125 members of the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus are gearing up for an exciting and busy summer that includes a Pride Week concert and debuts in Washington, D.C., and Tampa, Florida at the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses Festival V, an international festival featuring over
100 choruses and 5,000 participants.
The Chorus teams up with the Renaissance City Men's Chorus of Pittsburgh for the finale of the 1995-96 season June 22 at 8 pm and June 23 at 2:30 pm in Weigel Hall at the Wexner Center. “Side by Side in Song" will feature individual perfor-
mances by both choruses as well as a common set featuring nearly 200 singers.
The Chorus will present its GALA V set, which it will perform in Tampa, including "Rhapsody on a Sonnet,” the piece commisioned and premiered by the Chorus last June. A special multimedia pre-
sentation featuring the works of Michelangelo will accompany the Chorus. "I'm very excited about the addition of Michelangelo's works to his beautiful poetry that we are performing,” said Artistic Director David M. Price.
Other works on the program include "Bohemian Rhapsody," made famous by Queen; "Esperanto," a song of peace and understanding; and an intriguing medley, "Civitates Urbis," which is Latin for "the Village People." The two choruses will also present the local premieres of songs commissioned especially for the GALA V festival.
Following the concert, the Chorus will appear the following week at the Pride Festival before leaving July 4 for Washington, where they appear with the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, D.C. and the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus from Minneapolis on July 5. Not missing a beat, the Chorus flies from D.C. to Tampa to participate in GALA V for a full week.
Members of the Chorus are excited about sharing their talents with other choruses from around the country and the world in its upcoming performances and looks forward also to sharing its current recording, Stepping Out, which made its debut last year.
Tickets for the June 22-23 performances at Weigel Hall range in price from $8 to $20 in advance, and are available by calling the Chorus box office at 614-4610022, or Ticketmaster at 614-431-3600. For information regarding the Chorus, call 614-228-CGMC (228-2462).

Learn traditional dancing in a gender-free way
With calling by Boston dance leader Chris Ricciotti and music by the Columbus Pit Bull String Band, this year's Pride Festival will include an unusual opportunity to learn the traditional American folk art of contra dancing.
Inspired by folk dancing from the British isles, contra dancing is an interactive form of partnered line dancing. The term "gender-free" refers to an all-position approach, which is a welcome change from
the traditional boy/girl assigned dance parts. It offers a welcoming atmosphere for dancers of all orientations, and provides an excellent opportunity to learn all aspects of the dance.
No previous experience is expected or required, so come out and learn with the rest of us. The dance will be held on Saturday, June 29 from 7:30 to 10:30 pm at the First Congregational Church at 444 East Broad Street in Columbus. Admission is $5.
